Strategic Priorities

Central Wyoming College is a small two-year open door public comprehensive community college officially established in 1966. The college's service area has more than 15,000 square miles and serves approximately 60,000 people in three counties. The main campus is located in Riverton, (Fremont County) Wyoming, a rural community with a population of 10,000. The college has outreach centers in Lander, Dubois and Jackson, and provides services in Thermopolis.


The main campus is adjacent to the exterior boundaries of the Wind River Reservation, home to the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes. Serving the educational needs of the diverse community has always meant fostering multicultural awareness and appreciation. As early as the 1950s, community leaders recognized the need for a college to lift the predominately agricultural and mining community educationally and culturally. CWC has the highest percentage of minority students of any community college in Wyoming and has been recognized by Community College Week as one of the "top 100 associate degree producers of American Indian students."


The college has earned the reputation of being a high quality institution where new and innovative programs are developed to best serve CWC students and the community at large. The college has secured several major federal grants to create a variety of workforce development programs as well as pre-college programs that have been particularly helpful to the large Native American population residing within the college district. CWC's dual and concurrent enrollment programs, where high school juniors and seniors in the three-county service area get a jump start on their college education is the envy of all the colleges in Wyoming.


Recently the college received a grant to educate students in urgently needed health care professions which coincided with the completion of the new Health and Science Center that opened in the fall of 2013. The college completed its Intertribal Education and Community Center in 2010, and remodeled the Classroom Wing and Professional-Technical Center in 2013. CWC plans to break ground on a new Lander Center and open a residence facility at its Sinks Canyon Center in 2014. The college's Robert A. Peck Arts Center is one of the finest visual and performing arts centers in the area, and CWC is home to the state's only public broadcasting station, Wyoming PBS.


The college staff is inspired by its mission and its clearly articulated strategic priorities, developed by scanning for changes in the communities CWC serves to address emerging needs and market demands. The current Strategic Plan and Annual Report can be found on the college website.


The overriding goal of the college is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to live in a globally interdependent world and to offer the support services needed to help them succeed. The vision of the college is to provide lifelong learning opportunities beyond the boundaries of time and place. The mission of the college is to enhance the quality of life through innovation and excellence in education.



The elected seven-member Board of Trustees of Central Wyoming College seeks a visionary educator with a record of strong leadership and accomplishments to serve as its next president. Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees, the president is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the college. The new president will represent the college and advocate for its mission at the local, state and national levels. The president will be a compassionate leader strongly committed to student success, the college and the economic development of the large geographical region served by the college.


In addition to the multiple roles and responsibilities of all excellent presidents in a rural college, the new President of Central Wyoming College must be able to:

  • Capitalize on CWC's excellent reputation for successful innovative programs and services to maximize student access and success
  • Ensure access and success for the communities' diverse and underrepresented populations with appropriate programs and support services
  • Strengthen relationships and collaborative efforts with local Native American communities that result in improved student recruitment and completion.
  • Establish and inspire a unified college direction through a data-driven strategic planning process
  • Implement enrollment management strategies consistent with the comprehensive mission and available resources
  • Contribute to regional economic development by understanding and responding appropriately to local business and industry workforce development needs
  • Be successful in the acquisition and management of the college's fiscal resources including generating alternative sources of revenue and working successfully with the college foundation
  • Advocate strongly for the college at the local, state and national levels by building good relationships with community leaders and elected officials
  • Model superb interpersonal skills, respect for the contributions of all staff, and a collaborative leadership style resulting in a positive campus climate
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to policy governance as established by the board of trustees 
  • Appreciate and build upon the unique characteristics of a rural college serving a large geographical area




The successful new president will:

  • Build partnerships with leaders in business and industry, P-16 education, and community-based organizations
  • Be a collaborative and decisive decision-maker willing to take risks

  • Bring out the best in others by empowering, delegating and supporting staff, faculty and administrators
  • Model and encourage a high level of energy, enthusiasm, creativity and innovation.
  • Have excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be visible, approachable and accessible on campus and in the community.
  • Establish a trusting and respectful working relationship with each member of the Board of Trustees
  • Demonstrate loyalty to the college and the communities it serves
  • Honor what is good about CWC while continuously striving to be even better


  1. An earned Doctorate Degree from an accredited institution
  2. Senior administrative leadership experience in community and technical colleges
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the teaching and learning process leading to student success

To ensure full consideration, application materials should be received no later than March 20. The position will remain open until filled. This is a confidential search process.

  1. A letter of application that succinctly addresses the opportunities and challenges identified and how your experience and professional qualifications prepare you to serve the needs of Central Wyoming College (not to exceed five pages).
